Darlington shopping centre commercial development stalled again

Construction of a Darlington shopping centre has been delayed once again, although the developer hopes work will begin as early as next year.

The company behind a new commercial development in Darlington are hopeful that they can bring one of the major retail chains that stepped out of the scheme back on board.

Speaking to the Northern Echo, Discovery Properties indicated that work on the £110 million property investment could begin as early as next year.

Construction of the shopping centre has been delayed several times, with Debenhams having stepped out of the scheme.

Chief executive of the developer in charge of the project Hugo Hawkins explained that work starting depended on resolving construction finance and other issues, adding that the recession had forced the stall.

The success of the project will also be determined by the developer's ability to secure tenants, which may remain difficult in the current retail climate.

Speaking at the Totally DIY show in Birmingham this week, director general of the British Retail Consortium Stephen Robertson explained that despite the retail sector's resilience during the recession, confidence has "gone as far as it is going to go for now".ADNFCR-2843-ID-19610995-ADNFCR
