Retail landlords are very edgy, which will allow retail businesses to take advantage of some of the fantastic deals that are emerging following the recession, according to a leading sector expert.
Businesses have been urged to take advantage of
commercial development landlords' edginess as the UK emerges from the recession.
Speaking at the Totally DIY show in Birmingham earlier this week, D&G Hardware's Toby Roberts explained that the lack of
sources of finance and viable tenants means there are some "fantastic deals" available for retail businesses keen to expand.
He explained that firms must attempt to find ways to overcome the current pressures on business.
Mr Roberts, who owns D&G Hardware, explained: "They [landlords] don't want empty units and there are major deals to be done with the existing landlord and if you are growing [the business].
"There are also deals to be done with suppliers they don't want to lose much-needed business so there are always opportunities."
His comments follow the publication of the Christie and Co's Business Outlook report last month, which indicated that retail property prices fell by 9.8 per cent in 2009.
This compares to a drop in value of just 6.5 per cent in 2008.
