Two solicitors charged over £50m mortgage fraud

Two solicitors have been charged in connection with high-value commercial mortgage frauds.

A pair of solicitors appeared at the City of London magistrates court last Thursday (February 18th) after they were charged with offences connected to a series of high-value commercial mortgage frauds.

Mark Knights, from Cheshire, and Kamran Malik, from Birmingham, have been charged with three counts of obtaining a money transfer by deception, with the proceedings set to be transferred to Southwark Crown Court.

Mr Knights was employed by Mace & Jones Solicitors in Manchester and Mr Malik was working for A&H Solicitors in Birmingham at the time the property development loan frauds took place.

The case was referred to the Serious Fraud Office by West Midlands Police and is related to an investigation in which six people were charged in connection with the same offences in December last year.

It follows news that the Financial Services Authority has banned London-based mortgage broker Kevin Byrne for failing to undertake due diligence on client referrals.ADNFCR-2843-ID-19628773-ADNFCR
