Commercial development owners 'must plan CO2 reduction strategies'

Commercial property solutions company Portal has released a new white paper to advise businesses on the impact of energy efficiency legislation.

The government's Energy Efficiency Scheme is forcing firms to make significant changes to their infrastructure and process in order to cut their carbon emissions, Portal claims.

As a result, green issues should be at the forefront of any commercial investment firm's planning for the future, according to Portal's managing director John Gotley.

Mr Gotley said: "We felt that it was important to share the results of this report to help fellow property professionals understand the current position and implications of Carbon Footprint, so they can plan their own sustainable strategies."

The paper is therefore designed to act as a guide on how the legislation affects the sustainability of new or existing office space for commercial development companies.

Earlier this month, Land Securities' head of sustainability and engineering Neil Pennell told the Financial Times that carbon emissions legislation is a serious concern for landlords.

Under the current rules, landlords will be responsible for the carbon outputs of their tenants, Mr Punnell added.
