Commercial development projects must be socially sustainable, as a street full of iconic buildings makes no sense, an architect has claimed.
It is important that
commercial development projects are socially and economically sustainable, as well as being environmentally so.
This is the view of leading architect Neil MacOmish, who believes that the role of the architect is to integrate buildings into the landscape, the Western Mail reports.
A street filled with iconic buildings would not make practical or financial sense, Mr MacOmish says, adding that it is important that the architect has regular contact with the
property investment firm which owns the land.
"To me the danger here is that the whole of the property and construction industry is seen as building white elephants that have no real community or social use and we have to be mindful of that," he told the publication.
Mr MacOmish's comments come as the number of commercial developments being undertaken appears set to increase, after the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors claimed that
commercial mortgage providers were beginning to lend again.
