Job losses in the construction sector look likely in the face of public spending cuts, which will have an impact on commercial development.
Commercial development firms will continue to struggle with new construction projects in the face of public spending cuts, it is claimed.
According to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), a double-dip in the construction industry is a serious concern, which would affect the plans of
property investment firms.
The Construction Skills Network has predicted that government spending cuts will see some 68,000 jobs lost from the sector between 2011 and 2015, having already suggested that 38,000 will be lost this year.
FMB director of external affairs Brian Berry says that this prediction is certainly a realistic possibility.
"There is a danger that we are going to repeat what happened in the early 1990s when we lost over half a million people from the construction industry, which resulted in a skills gap in the early part of this century," he said.
Mr Berry went on to say that the onus was now on the government to support the sector and invest in apprenticeships.
